Recognition for Rachel Carson

Virginia School To WatchRachel Carson Middle School opened its doors to students during the 1998-99 school  year.  In the school's short history, it has been recognized for outstanding programs in environmental awareness, technology, mathematics, special education, industrial technology, physical education, and after-school clubs and activities. Since it's opening, Rachel Carson Middle School has been recognized by numerous organizations, such as the National Middle School Association as a "Showcase School," The Virginia Middle School Association and the Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform as a "School to Watch."

What is Schools To Watch? In 1999, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform began a national program to identify high-performing middle grades schools. The Forum developed criteria for identifying these schools, and believes that three things are true of each:

  • They are academically excellent -- these schools challenge all students to use their minds well.

  • They are developmentally responsive -- these schools are sensitive to the unique developmental challenges of early adolescence.

  • They are socially equitable -- these schools are democratic and fair, providing every student with high-quality teachers, resources and supports.

In addition, Rachel Carson was the recipient of The Governor's Award for Educational Excellence in 2008 through 2011.

Rachel Carson has a multitude of programs that cater to a wide range of student abilities and special needs. The school houses a gifted and talented center and provides honor programs in the four core subject areas. Math offerings include Math 7, Math 8, Math 7 Honors, Algebra, Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors and Algebra II. Also offered are a wide variety of foreign languages for high school credit. Our school's special education program includes a full continuum of services to meet the needs of all students.
